Solar Preparatory School for Girls, Fall 2016

In the fall of 2016, we engaged with a local Dallas Independent School District (DISD) school, the Solar Preparatory School for Girls. Solar Prep is a new school founded to serve a diverse group of primary school girls through alternative means, including innovative and engaging programming; a focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM); the inclusion of a makerspace; and a partnership with the Girl Scouts. At Solar Prep, the team of educators responsible for using the makerspace was struggling to set up an appropriate learning environment and articulated learning objectives. We coached them to restructure the space, create learning objectives, and design learning experiences using our pedagogical frameworks. We continue our engagement with them this year, providing professional development for their whole staff as well as regular coaching sessions with the small group of educators working in the makerspace.
