The SMU Maker Education Project is dedicated to inspiring transformational maker-based learning experiences for students in the K12 system. Our mission is to support the academic integration of the maker education movement in K12 schools in a sustainable way that creates a lasting change. By leveraging new and emerging technologies and tools in combination with supportive, student-centered facilitation, we believe maker education can develop students who are self-actualized, resilient and excited to take on the toughest challenges of the 21st century and beyond.

Setting The Wheels In Motion

In order to inspire educators to design these kinds of learning experiences, we develop pedagogical frameworks, open-source curriculum, tools and resources as well as engaging professional development opportunities for educators. We deliver these resources and experiences out of the back of the MakerTruck, a mobile makerspace.

What is Maker-Based Instruction?

It’s a way to teach skills and content by engaging students in designing and creating tangible, sharable objects. It’s much more than technical know-how. Maker-Based Instruction (MBI) can be used to teach any educational content, from STEM to social studies to literacy. MBI also builds problem-solving abilities, creativity, and affective skills like persistence and empathy.
